The Death Of Bees(Lisa O'Donnell)

This story was fast flowing. Told in alternate voices of Marnie and Nelly and Lenny. Marnie and Nelly are sisters and they have just buried their parents; parents who have basically done nothing but neglect them for their drugs and drinking etc. The mother kills the father and the mother hangs herself. The girls find them and feel no remorse- good riddance. Lenny, the homosexual older neighbor befriends them and takes them in despite his checkered past. The chapter are mere snippets but just enough to build a story that we readers can follow and see what life can be like for kids who are withheld the basics such as love and security. I loved the book but had a few questions which was why It wasn't a 5 star book. I highly recommend it for those who like fast paced coming of age stories that aren't all candy and flowers

  1. Wow ... just ... wow. This sounds like a story that will stick with me for a long time, and one I should start reading RIGHT NOW.

  2. This is a very engaging novel told from the perspective of three different characters. I thought this approach might weigh down the novel but it was orchestrated beautifully and seamlessly. It is set in Glasgow and takes place over the course of a year. "Seeing" the story from the eyes of the different, very flawed characters is quite enlightening. Definitely worthwhile!
